Arts Engage Initiative

Students performing

The Arts Engage Initiative (AEI) is a four-year, longitudinal research program, funded through a US DOE’s Arts Education Model Development and Dissemination (AEMDD) grant. AEI measured the impact of high quality arts integration at the middle school level by working with a group of students at four schools throughout their middle school years. In the 2013 cohort, CAE was one of only eight grant recipients nationwide (and the only New York organization).

Dynamic, cross-disciplinary arts curricula were designed by the AEI team, comprised of CAE staff, school leadership, and teachers, in collaboration with expert teaching artists and experienced coaches and CAE staff. Units of study were based on national and state standards and helped close achievement, experience, and opportunity gaps in middle school education. Initial research findings showed increases in student performance and improvements in school environment across multiple measures. A final report will be released in early 2018.

Each partner middle school received:

- Year-long theatre-social studies integration residencies for three implementation years

- An experienced coach with supervisory experience and expertise in arts education

- On-going professional learning for school leaders and the participating staff

- Professional learning institutes for participating teachers and teaching artists

- Phone or in-person consultations with the Project Principal Investigator about any aspect of the research methods, protections, and policies for all participants

- Family engagement events

- Student performance and exhibition opportunities
