CAE’s Career Development Program  

CAE’s Career Development Program is an acclaimed creative youth development program originally created to address the lack of diversity in the NYC arts industry. The program boasts more than  700  graduates who have been mentored to pursue successful careers at NYC cultural institutions and creative businesses, enriching the city with their professionalism and perspectives.

During the 2020-21 school year, CAE’s Career Development Program provided 20 talented NYC public high school seniors a full semester of career- and life-skills workshops, arts activities, and mentored workplace experiences through internships at arts organizations and creative businesses.

CAE partners with organizations like Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Bjarke Ingles Group, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn Arts Council, Children's Museum of Manhattan, Fashion Institute of Technology, Harlem School of the Arts, Joyce Theater, NY Philharmonic, Orchestra of St. Lukes, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Rockwell Group, Roundabout Theatre Company, St. Nick's Alliance, Studio Museum in Harlem, and Vital Theatre Company to provide internships for teens.

Participants attend a 70-hour internship preparation "Boot Camp" over a four-week period in January and February, work as interns for 10-12 hours per week over 12-13 weeks, and meet on ten Fridays for two hours of further instruction, learning, and reflection. Field trip events, such as attending art exhibits and performances, are integral to the program and are part of  Boot Camp and Friday activities. Participants receive MetroCards throughout the program, to ensure that transportation is never an obstacle to participation. In addition, they receive a stipend along with Financial Literacy instruction, to introduce and promote sound money management habits.
